Former Polish Police Officer Charged in Zondacrypto Case Amid Ongoing Investigation

The Polish prosecutor's office has charged a former police officer, Artur K., in connection with the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto. Detained by the Central Bureau of Cybercrime (CBZC) on Tuesday, he faces charges related to participation in an organized crime group and causing significant financial losses to various entities, including BitBay and BB Trade Estonia. Authorities discovered documents linked to the exchange during a search of his residence, and he is currently being questioned as a suspect while the prosecutor's office considers pre-trial detention.

In a separate but related investigation, police in Katowice are searching a fuel depot, identified as the last known location of Zondacrypto founder Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since March 2022. The investigation has been classified as illegal deprivation of liberty, with a suspect accused of tampering with surveillance evidence at the gas station. Suszek originally founded the exchange in Katowice in 2014, later relocating its registration to Estonia and rebranding it as Zondacrypto in 2020, claiming a customer base of 1.3 million, predominantly from Poland.

Zondacrypto ceased operations in April 2022, freezing withdrawals, and the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit revoked its operating license on June 29 of the same year. Since then, at least five individuals have been charged in connection with the case, including Radosław P., the former president of the Polish Olympic Committee. All accused parties have denied the charges, and the related accusations are yet to be adjudicated in court.
