Hong Kong Monetary Authority to Explore Regulated Stablecoins and Tokenized Deposits

Eddie Yue, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), announced on September 23 that the Centralized Debt Instruments Settlement System (CMU) will introduce new services by the end of 2026. Speaking at the Treasury Markets Summit, Yue highlighted the maturation of Hong Kong's financial markets, including stocks, currency, and bonds, alongside the rapid emergence of digital finance.

The upcoming services will feature on-chain 24-hour real-time settlement capabilities, which will support digital Hong Kong dollars and central bank digital currencies (CBDC). Additionally, the CMU will investigate the potential acceptance of tokenized deposits and regulated stablecoins for settlement purposes on its platform. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of financial transactions in Hong Kong's evolving digital landscape.
