Jeonbuk Bank Introduces South Korea's First Bitcoin-Backed Loans for Corporations

Jeonbuk Bank, a subsidiary of JB Financial Group, has launched South Korea's first Bitcoin-backed loans for corporate clients, allowing businesses to borrow Korean won using Bitcoin as collateral. This innovative financial product was introduced on October 12, 2026, marking a significant development in the country's banking sector.

The bank does not take custody of the Bitcoin pledged for these loans. Instead, it collaborates with qualified virtual asset service providers that comply with South Korea's custody standards, including ISMS certification and the Virtual Asset User Protection Act. Jeonbuk Bank's role is primarily focused on valuation and lending, while the actual management of the Bitcoin remains with the custodians.

The loans are exclusively available to corporate clients and are intended for business operating funds, such as payroll and supplier payments. Jeonbuk Bank has chosen Bitcoin as the sole collateral due to its liquidity and trading volume advantages over other digital assets. The bank employs a layered valuation process to mitigate risks associated with Bitcoin's volatility, utilizing average prices from multiple global exchanges and conducting stress tests.

This initiative comes shortly after the implementation of revised Civil Execution Rules on October 1, 2026, which provide a legal framework for recovering value from seized digital assets in the event of loan defaults. Jeonbuk Bank aims to evolve into a 'crypto bank' and may consider expanding its offerings to include other digital assets in the future, depending on market demand and regulatory developments.
