Leading Crypto Venture Capital Firms Report Significant Project Shutdowns

Recent analysis reveals that a total of 216 projects backed by prominent venture capital firms in the cryptocurrency sector have ceased operations. This figure represents approximately 21.75% of the 993 independent projects funded by five major institutions: Coinbase Ventures, YZi Labs, Pantera Capital, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), and Paradigm, according to investment data from RootData.

Among these firms, Pantera Capital has the highest shutdown rate, with over 24% of its investments, or 51 out of 206 projects, reported as shut down. Coinbase Ventures follows closely with a shutdown rate of 22.69%, while a16z has a rate of 20.09%, with 43 of its 214 projects marked as closed. Paradigm and YZi Labs have shutdown rates of 19.49% and 13.56%, respectively.

Despite a16z being a focal point of public scrutiny, it is not the firm with the highest shutdown rate. Notably, among its 148 lead projects, 29 have been reported as shut down, which accounts for 19.59%. This includes Linera, which recently announced its closure, and Universal, which is in the process of shutting down. These figures highlight the operational risks that even leading venture capital firms face in the volatile cryptocurrency market.
