NEAR Intents Recovers $3.865 Million After Exploit Linked to Omni Bug
NEAR Intents, a cross-chain trading and settlement protocol operating on the NEAR blockchain, experienced a significant security breach that resulted in the loss of approximately $3.865 million in USDT. The exploit occurred between September 30 and October 1, 2026, due to a flaw in the Omni deposit-and-withdrawal system, which allowed an attacker to drain funds from a vault on the BNB Chain.
In a swift response, NEAR Intents General Manager Alex Shevchenko publicly identified the attacker and issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the return of the stolen funds. Remarkably, the full amount was recovered within 24 hours, with the return completed by October 2. The attacker reportedly left a message advocating for bug bounties during the process, highlighting a potential shift towards collaborative security measures in decentralized finance (DeFi).
The NEAR Intents team acted quickly to patch the vulnerability, addressing the issue within an hour of detection. Following the exploit, services across 11 networks were paused for approximately 12 hours to ensure comprehensive remediation. Illia Polosukhin, co-founder of NEAR, played a crucial role in managing the situation as it unfolded. NEAR Intents has also committed to compensating users for any losses incurred during the incident from its treasury funds.
