OpenAI expands early-stage safety evaluations by third-party organizations for AI models

PANews, September 23 — According to Bloomberg, OpenAI announced it will allow more third-party organizations to get involved at the early stages of AI model training, evaluation, and deployment to conduct technical safety assessments. Previously, the company typically only brought in external teams to evaluate capabilities and risks before a model's release. OpenAI stated that such evaluations need to be independent, scientifically rigorous, with strong security mechanisms and clear division of responsibilities. OpenAI is in talks with multiple new and existing partners, including METR and Redwood Research, and some evaluators may be placed inside the company's offices in the future to participate in testing the most sensitive stages.
