Scott Bessent Considered for AI Czar Role in Trump Administration

Scott Bessent, the United States Treasury Secretary, is reportedly a leading candidate for the position of AI czar under President Donald Trump. This development comes as Bessent has increasingly engaged in discussions surrounding artificial intelligence policy, including recent talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

During these discussions, Bessent and He explored the possibility of establishing a formal dialogue between the United States and China regarding AI, as well as a notification mechanism for incidents involving AI that could threaten national security. Bessent emphasized the importance of maintaining human and corporate accountability for AI actions, rather than attributing responsibility solely to the technology itself.

While no official appointment has been made, White House spokesperson Kush Desai cautioned that any reports on personnel decisions should be viewed as speculative. Other candidates for the AI czar position include Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Scott Kupor, Director of the Office of Personnel Management. The role may not require Bessent to vacate his current position at the Treasury, as Trump has previously assigned additional responsibilities to cabinet officials without requiring them to leave their existing roles.

The discussions on AI come at a critical time, with Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled to meet at the White House on September 24, where AI is expected to be a significant topic of conversation.
