SEC's Tokenized Stock Announcement Sparks Debate on Bitcoin's Future

On September 17, 2026, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced a five-year conditional exemption allowing qualifying trading platforms to trade tokenized versions of National Market System (NMS) stocks. This exemption permits these platforms to operate without registering as traditional exchanges or dealers, provided the tokenized stocks are fully backed by actual equities and confer identical shareholder rights, including dividends and voting power. The announcement has significant implications for the trading landscape, enabling around-the-clock trading and potentially reducing settlement times to near-instant finality.

Peter Schiff, a long-time critic of Bitcoin, expressed skepticism regarding the market's positive reaction to the SEC's announcement. He argues that the introduction of tokenized equities could diminish Bitcoin's appeal. Schiff contends that if investors can access tokenized stocks that offer real dividends and voting rights, the necessity for Bitcoin as an investment may decline. He stated, "Yesterday’s big Bitcoin rally following the SEC’s tokenized stock announcement makes no sense. The news is actually bearish for Bitcoin."

In contrast, many market participants view the SEC's endorsement of blockchain-based infrastructure for regulated securities as a validation of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. They argue that tokenized stocks could enhance decentralized finance by serving as collateral or integrating with stablecoins in liquidity pools. While Schiff maintains that tokenized stocks and Bitcoin serve fundamentally different purposes, the ongoing debate highlights the evolving dynamics of the financial markets and the role of digital assets.
