USDT to Be Relaunched on Bitcoin Network as Early as October

      • USDT returns to the Bitcoin network after a 12-year hiatus.
      • Utexo is preparing to launch the stablecoin via RGB.
      • The new infrastructure will enable private transfers.

Tether’s USDT stablecoin is returning to the Bitcoin network after more than a decade: infrastructure project Utexo, which has obtained a commercial license to issue the asset, plans to launch it this month.

The initiative aims to make USDT on Bitcoin available to exchanges, wallets, and payment providers, while also offering private transfers, direct BTC-to-USDT swaps, and lending backed by native Bitcoin.

“It’s coming home,” said Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, commenting on USDT’s return to Bitcoin.

USDT first appeared in the Bitcoin ecosystem back in 2014 via the Omni protocol. Later, Ethereum and Tron became the stablecoin’s primary networks. USDT’s market capitalization now stands at $184 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

Utexo Brings USDT Back to Bitcoin

According to CoinDesk, Utexo was founded in 2025, and in early 2026 the project raised $7.5 million. The company has obtained a commercial license to issue USDT on Bitcoin and will use the stablecoin’s trademark to integrate it with exchanges, wallets, and payment services.

“Tether has always been a Bitcoin company. Bitcoin for them is a stability haven, along with gold. That’s why Tether kept buying BTC and supporting the Bitcoin community,” said Viktor Ihnatiuk, Utexo co-founder.

As of mid-August, Tether held around 100,000 BTC worth $8.4 billion, according to Bitcoin Treasuries. Ihnatiuk added that his personal observations point to Bitcoin’s importance for Tether, and Utexo’s goal is to make USDT on this network as accessible as it is on other blockchains.

USDT Will Use RGB for Private Transactions

Utexo plans to use the RGB protocol and the client-side validation model so that most transaction data does not end up on Bitcoin’s public ledger. Ownership will be tied to unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), while the blockchain itself will be used for cryptographic proof of ownership.

The project outlined three main use cases:

      • Private USDT transfers
      • Direct swaps of a native asset for USDT without an exchange as an intermediary
      • Lending against native bitcoin without the need to wrap the first cryptocurrency into a token on another blockchain

At the same time, RGB has a specific feature when it comes to freezing assets. Utexo will not be able to freeze a UTXO the same way Tether can block an Ethereum address. Instead, the company plans to maintain a blacklist of UTXOs linked to sanctioned or illegal activity and share this information with exchanges and service providers.

“The UTXO will just become unredeemable, so nobody would be able to send it back to a bridge or minting tool or withdraw it to Ethereum or Tron,” Ihnatiuk explained.

The next step after launching USDT on Bitcoin is expected to be integration with the Lightning Network. Utexo is considering using USDT to pay network fees.

As a reminder, KPMG recently conducted a physical audit of Tether’s reserves.
