AutoZone (AZO) Stock Climbs 2% on Strong Q4 Earnings Despite Revenue Shortfall
Key Takeaways
- The retailer delivered fiscal Q4 earnings per share of $56.05, surpassing analyst projections of approximately $54
- Revenue climbed 5.6% year-over-year to $6.59 billion, falling short of the anticipated $6.7 billion
- Comparable store sales increased only 1.5%, significantly below the projected 3.8% growth
- Shares of AZO climbed 2.1% to $2,862 during Tuesday’s premarket session
- Throughout the fiscal year, the company expanded its footprint with 374 new locations and generated $20.3 billion in total sales
Shares of AutoZone advanced 2.1% to $2,862 during premarket hours on Tuesday following the auto parts retailer’s quarterly results that exceeded profit forecasts while falling short on revenue and comparable sales metrics.
The Memphis-based retailer announced fiscal fourth quarter earnings per share of $56.05, marking an increase from $48.71 in the prior year period and exceeding analyst expectations of roughly $54. Revenue increased 5.6% to reach $6.59 billion, though this figure trailed the Street consensus of $6.7 billion.
Comparable store sales on a constant currency basis registered growth of 1.5%, representing a substantial shortfall against the 3.8% expansion Wall Street had forecasted. U.S. comparable store sales specifically reached 1.6%.
Notwithstanding the revenue disappointment, gross profit margin improved by 182 basis points to reach 53.3%. This margin enhancement was partially attributed to a 145 basis point lift from tariff reimbursements and a 105 basis point non-cash LIFO adjustment. An increased commercial segment mix provided some offset to these positive factors.
Operating expenses as a proportion of total sales increased to 33.4% compared with 32.4% in the year-ago period, reflecting investments in strategic growth programs.
Net profit totaled $931.6 million, representing an increase from the $837 million recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
Executive Highlights Challenging Start But Improved Momentum
Chief Executive Officer Phil Daniele acknowledged headwinds early in the period. “In spite of a difficult selling environment the first eight weeks of our quarter, we remained committed to executing on our strategies to grow both our domestic and international businesses,” he said.
Daniele noted that sales momentum improved considerably during the latter eight weeks of the quarter and expressed confidence in the company’s positioning for revenue expansion as it enters fiscal year 2027.
Market participants appeared to emphasize the bottom-line beat over the top-line miss. Investors viewed the performance as encouraging relative to more conservative commentary from AutoZone’s industry peers, as elevated borrowing costs and heightened fuel prices continue pressuring discretionary consumer spending.
Competing auto parts retailers experienced sympathetic gains following the announcement. O’Reilly Automotive shares edged up 0.2% while Advance Auto Parts climbed 0.8% in morning trading.
Challenging Year-to-Date Performance for AZO
Prior to Tuesday’s premarket rally, AZO stock had declined 6.3% during September and registered a 17% loss year-to-date through Monday’s market close.
AutoZone concluded Monday’s regular trading session with a 1.8% decline, making Tuesday’s premarket advance a notable turnaround.
For the complete fiscal year, the automotive parts chain expanded its store base by 374 locations and delivered annual revenue of $20.3 billion, representing 7.4% year-over-year growth.
The company’s fiscal fourth quarter concluded on August 29, 2026.
