Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang Pushes Back Against AI Regulation, Stock Rallies 1.6%
Key Takeaways
- Nvidia shares gained 1.6% to $215.65 following CEO Jensen Huang’s opposition to AI regulation at a Salesforce event
- Huang characterized AI safety as “an engineering problem” and stated existing market forces provide adequate oversight
- Mark Zuckerberg of Meta supported the position, noting AI labs already possess strong incentives for safe model training
- Trump administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and AI adviser David Sacks, endorsed Huang’s perspective
- Wall Street analysts continue to rate NVDA as a “Buy” with an average price target of $324.34
Shares of Nvidia advanced 1.6% to $215.65 on Wednesday following CEO Jensen Huang’s firm rejection of proposed AI regulations, a stance that received backing from White House officials and prominent technology executives.
Speaking at a Salesforce conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, Huang challenged the notion that the artificial intelligence sector requires additional legislative oversight.
“Safety is an engineering problem,” Huang stated. “If you build a product or a service and you’re not confident in its functionality, capability, or safety, then don’t release it. The market forces are already there. We don’t need any new laws. We don’t need new regulations.”
His remarks followed a challenging period for NVDA earlier in the week, when executives from Anthropic and OpenAI advocated for decelerating AI development, sparking concerns that regulatory measures could constrain demand for Nvidia’s semiconductor products.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reinforced the deregulation argument. In a Tuesday social media post, he emphasized that AI laboratories already possess sufficient motivation to ensure safe model training practices.
Trump Administration Rallies Behind Huang
The current administration swiftly endorsed Huang’s viewpoint. Both Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House AI adviser David Sacks publicly referenced and supported Huang’s statements.
President Trump had already reached out to Huang by phone during a Monday summit to express opposition to proposals for an AI development pause. Such direct presidential engagement represents an uncommon level of executive branch support for a corporate leader.
The regulatory debate carries significant implications for Nvidia. Any legislation restricting procurement of its AI chips for model training purposes would directly impact the company’s primary revenue stream. A freeze on data center construction, a proposal advanced by Senator Bernie Sanders, represents a particularly severe threat to the business.
Wall Street Maintains Optimistic Outlook
From a financial standpoint, Nvidia’s performance remains robust. The company posted revenue of $96.22 billion in its latest quarterly report, representing a 105.9% year-over-year increase. Earnings per share reached $2.22, surpassing the analyst consensus estimate of $2.09 by $0.13.
The stock commenced trading at $227.38 on Tuesday, with a 52-week high of $236.54 and a low of $164.27. The company’s market capitalization stands at $5.48 trillion.
Institutional investors control 65.27% of outstanding shares. Recent institutional purchasers include Bank of America, Amundi, and Dimensional Fund Advisors.
Analyst price objectives have been trending upward. Truist Financial elevated its target to $346, KGI Securities increased its projection to $345, and the consensus estimate across 55 analysts stands at $324.34 with a prevailing “Buy” recommendation.
On the acquisition front, Nvidia has reportedly reached an agreement to purchase Hugging Face for approximately $12.9 billion, a transaction that would provide access to an extensive network of AI models and development talent.
One notable development: company insiders disposed of roughly $392.7 million in shares during the past 90 days, including a $144 million transaction by board member Mark Stevens in early September.
Nvidia has also announced a quarterly dividend of $0.25 per share, scheduled for distribution on October 1st, representing a yield of 0.4%.
