Philadelphia Fed Nonmanufacturing Survey Shows Mixed Results

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's nonmanufacturing survey revealed a significant decline in regional activity, with a reading of -22.0, down from -10.6 in the previous month. This marks the lowest level since June. While new orders also fell to -2.2 from -10.1, sales and revenues showed a slight decrease, dropping to 6.8 from 7.9. Despite these declines, the survey indicated a notable increase in full-time employment, which surged to 19.0, the highest level since June 2022, with 27% of firms reporting staff additions compared to 14% in August.

The survey's findings on prices were concerning, as the prices paid index rose to 37.8 from 29.2, while prices received increased to 20.0 from 10.3, also reaching its highest level since June. Wage and benefit costs continued to climb, with a reading of 40.7 compared to 39.2 previously. The average workweek improved to 8.5, a significant rebound from -13.4.

Looking ahead, firms expressed a more optimistic outlook for the next six months, with the firm activity outlook index rising to 20.3 from 12.4. However, uncertainty remains a significant concern, with 79% of firms citing it as at least a slight constraint on their operations. Additionally, 63% of firms identified energy markets as a constraint, although this figure has decreased from 83% in the previous quarter. Capital expenditure plans showed a positive trend, with the equipment and software index nearly quadrupling to 33.0, indicating that firms are investing in both personnel and technology despite the current challenges.
