- European Union defense expenditures are projected to reach €454 billion in 2025, representing a 9% annual increase

Planet Labs inaugurated its latest satellite production facility in Berlin this Tuesday, strategically positioning itself to capitalize on Europe’s expanding defense and intelligence sector. The expansive 5,700-square-meter manufacturing plant, situated in Berlin’s central Mitte neighborhood, will focus on building the company’s advanced Pelican satellite series.
Shares of PL were changing hands near $17 during Tuesday’s trading session, climbing approximately 4% intraday.
Manufacturing operations are scheduled to commence this fall, with the facility’s inaugural Berlin-manufactured satellite projected for completion by the close of 2026. When operating at full capacity, the plant can manufacture as many as 60 satellites annually.
Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Will Marshall noted that throughout its 15-year history, the organization has constructed and deployed 688 satellites, establishing itself as the world’s second-largest operator by satellite count. Marshall emphasized that the Berlin manufacturing center will enable Europe to develop its own large-scale Earth observation capabilities.
The facility’s opening ceremony was attended by Katherina Reiche, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy. Reiche emphasized that independent satellite intelligence capabilities represent “a prerequisite for security, resilience and genuine strategic autonomy.”
European Defense Expansion Fuels Market Growth
Defense budgets across the European Union are anticipated to hit €454 billion in 2025, reflecting a 9% year-over-year expansion. This security environment is generating substantial demand for domestically-controlled satellite capabilities among NATO alliance members.
Planet Labs has already established significant market presence throughout the continent. The firm recently secured a major German federal government agreement providing dedicated satellite constellation access. Additionally, the company fulfilled a Swedish sovereign satellite delivery just four months after contract execution, advancing that nation’s space program timeline by four years.
Over 30% of Planet Labs’ international workforce is based in European locations. The organization maintains operational offices in Berlin, Haarlem, Ljubljana, Graz, and London. Its European ground station infrastructure spanning Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Iceland processes approximately 50% of the company’s worldwide satellite data transmissions.
The Berlin operation will add 70 new positions, expanding the city’s employee base to roughly 220 personnel.
Financial Performance Shows 58% Revenue Growth
For its second quarter of fiscal year 2027, which concluded in July, Planet Labs recorded revenue totaling $116.1 million. This represented a 58% increase compared to the corresponding quarter in the prior year.
During its early September earnings presentation, the company disclosed approximately $4 billion worth of opportunities in its sales pipeline. CEO Marshall indicated that roughly $1 billion of these prospective contracts are anticipated to finalize within the upcoming quarters.
Marshall attributed the heightened worldwide demand for satellite imagery partially to active military conflicts. Commercial satellite intelligence has proven instrumental in battlefield operations throughout Ukraine.
The initial batch of Berlin-manufactured Pelican satellites is slated for orbital deployment aboard an Isar Aerospace Spectrum launch vehicle in early 2027.
Analyst consensus on PL stock stands at Strong Buy, supported by eight Buy recommendations and two Hold ratings issued within the last three months. The mean analyst price target of $36.30 suggests approximately 113% upside potential from present trading levels.
