EUR/USD Remains Low Amid French Budget Concerns and US Inflation Data

The EUR/USD currency pair is currently consolidating at lower levels as concerns over France's fiscal situation and upcoming US inflation data weigh on market sentiment. Recent comments from Federal Reserve officials have tempered expectations for an interest rate hike in October, yet the US dollar has found support due to risk-off flows linked to European debt issues, particularly in France. The yield on French government bonds has risen sharply, widening the spread over German Bunds to levels not seen since the eurozone debt crisis, which has contributed to the dollar's strength.

France's government has proposed a budget for 2027 that aims for a fiscal deficit of 5.0% of GDP, down from a previous target of 5.4%. While this adjustment has somewhat eased market concerns, the proposal still faces challenges in parliament. Eurozone finance ministers and the European Central Bank (ECB) have urged France to establish a credible budget to restore confidence among investors. The outcome of these discussions will be closely monitored, as improvements could bolster the euro, while negative developments may further depress its value.

In the United States, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report set to be released this week is anticipated to influence market dynamics significantly. A higher-than-expected core CPI could reignite discussions of a potential rate hike, providing a boost to the US dollar. Conversely, a softer report may exert downward pressure on the dollar, particularly if it leads to a decline in Treasury yields. As inflationary pressures persist, driven by rising energy prices, the ECB is expected to remain cautious regarding interest rate adjustments, with market expectations leaning towards a potential rate hike in December.
