India's Gold Imports More Than Double in July Amid Demand Recovery

India's gold imports saw a significant increase in July, with the value rising to $4.16 billion from $1.97 billion in June, according to the World Gold Council. This marks a doubling of import value and reflects a recovery in physical demand as consumers and retailers prepare for the upcoming festive season. Estimated import volumes reached between 40 and 45 tonnes, a notable rise from June's 20 tonnes, following two months of weaker imports.

The increase in gold imports is attributed to stronger jewellery demand, as consumers responded positively to lower and more stable prices. Retailers and manufacturers have been replenishing their inventories ahead of the festive buying period. Additionally, gold exchange activity has supplemented supply, indicating a genuine recovery in demand rather than merely a reduction in recycling.

Investment in gold also remained steady, with Indian gold ETFs recording net inflows of approximately INR 15.6 billion, or $163 million, in July. Total holdings increased by one tonne to 120 tonnes, and assets under management rose by 2% month on month to $18.1 billion. Furthermore, futures trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India saw a rise in average daily volumes and turnover, signaling renewed interest in gold trading. Despite these gains, trading volumes remain below earlier peaks, reflecting ongoing market dynamics.
