Shares of Microsoft rallied on Friday, surging as much as 4% to touch $516.39 during afternoon market hours. The upward momentum followed Oppenheimer’s decision to raise its price target on the software behemoth alongside Microsoft’s announcement of a comprehensive Copilot platform redesign.
Brian Schwartz, an analyst at Oppenheimer, elevated his price objective on Microsoft from $515 to $570 while reaffirming his Outperform rating. Schwartz highlighted growing momentum as enterprises increasingly adopt Microsoft as their primary platform for artificial intelligence deployment.
Adding to the bullish sentiment, Stifel’s Brad Reback upgraded the stock from hold to buy, raising his price target from $530 to $575. This new target suggests potential upside of approximately 11% from Friday’s close.
The broader tech sector contributed to Friday’s market gains. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, which counts Microsoft among its top holdings, advanced 0.8%. The S&P 500 posted a more modest gain of 0.2%.
Microsoft Pivots Copilot Strategy Toward Business Users
Microsoft has consolidated its consumer-facing and enterprise Copilot offerings into one unified application designed specifically for corporate environments. The decision marks the end of the company’s efforts to develop a general-purpose AI companion for individual consumers.
At a recent preview event, Microsoft executive Charles Lamanna clarified the strategic shift. He emphasized that the company’s objective isn’t creating a personal companion application, but rather delivering productivity solutions that help professionals accomplish tasks efficiently.
The reimagined platform revolves around three primary components. The central hub integrates conversational AI with task management capabilities, enabling users to modify Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents directly within the interface.
The second component leverages GitHub Copilot infrastructure to enable non-developers to create applications and automated workflows through natural language commands. This functionality operates within a controlled environment managed by corporate IT departments.
The third element, dubbed Autopilot, functions as a continuous agent deployed within an organization’s private cloud infrastructure. It’s capable of executing complex, multi-step processes autonomously without requiring ongoing human oversight.
Microsoft Introduces Hybrid Revenue Model
The company has implemented a dual pricing structure for its Copilot services. Standard conversational features are available through a fixed subscription model, whereas advanced autonomous capabilities are charged on a consumption basis.
This adjustment introduces variability into Microsoft’s AI revenue streams. The company currently serves over 30 million paid enterprise Copilot subscribers, which previously provided predictable, per-seat recurring revenue.
Consumption-based pricing links a portion of that income to actual usage patterns of the autonomous tools. This represents a departure from the traditional fixed-seat licensing approach.
Meanwhile, competitors continue pursuing the consumer AI market. Alphabet maintains its focus on individual users through Gemini, while OpenAI serves this segment via ChatGPT. Alphabet shares advanced 0.68% to $344.70 on Friday.
Microsoft’s stock performance has trailed its sector benchmark throughout much of 2026. The shares have appreciated 7% year-to-date, significantly underperforming the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund’s 37% gain during the same timeframe.
Despite raising his price target, Schwartz acknowledged potential headwinds. He cited AI-driven market disruption and the risk of enterprises accelerating technology purchases into earlier periods, both factors that could impact Microsoft’s growth trajectory.
Analyst consensus on Microsoft stock stands at Buy, based on ratings from 55 Wall Street analysts. The breakdown includes 14 Strong Buy ratings, 38 Buy ratings, and 3 Hold ratings.
The stock finished Thursday’s session at $497.93 before Friday’s rally. Microsoft’s 52-week trading range extends from a low of $348.54 to a high of $549.20.
