      Key Highlights

      • Shares of PayPal (PYPL) surged approximately 5% on Friday, reaching $55.13.
      • Market participants referenced a Betaville “uncooked” tip suggesting a potential all-stock acquisition offer from a West Coast technology firm.
      • PayPal’s board of directors is said to favor an all-cash transaction rather than a stock-based deal.

Market traders referenced a Betaville “uncooked” alert that made rounds Friday morning. The report indicated that a West Coast-based U.S. technology corporation might be considering an all-stock acquisition approach for PayPal.

However, this proposal structure diverges from PayPal’s board preferences. According to sources familiar with the matter, the board favors receiving an all-cash offer rather than accepting a stock-for-stock exchange.

This represents the latest chapter in PayPal’s ongoing acquisition saga this year. Payment processing rival Stripe, alongside private equity powerhouse Advent, had previously engaged in discussions regarding a complete acquisition of the company.

Acquisition Negotiations Collapsed Over Termination Fee Dispute

Those negotiations reportedly broke down due to disagreements surrounding a $2 billion termination fee. The parties couldn’t reach consensus on who would be responsible for paying this substantial penalty should the transaction fail to materialize.

The Stripe-Advent partnership had contemplated offering as much as $68 per share in an all-cash transaction. Such a deal would have assigned PayPal a valuation exceeding $50 billion.

Last month, the consortium ultimately walked away from the acquisition attempt completely. Since then, PayPal has continued exploring potential buyers.

PayPal declined to provide comment regarding the newest speculation, according to Benzinga reports.

In a separate development, Great Hill Capital Chairman Thomas Hayes presented his own acquisition scenario this week. He proposed that Meta Platforms (META) should consider acquiring PayPal.

Hayes suggested a valuation of $90 billion for such a transaction. He calculated this would deliver approximately a 7% free-cash-flow yield, arguing the deal would be accretive regardless of whether Meta utilized cash, stock, or a combination approach.

His proposal emphasizes data synergies. Hayes contended that combining PayPal’s extensive transaction data with Meta’s advertising infrastructure could create advertising capabilities rivaling Amazon (AMZN).

He projected a three-to-four-year payback period on the $90 billion investment. Hayes clarified his comments represented personal speculation as a shareholder rather than knowledge of any actual negotiations.

Technical Analysis of Current Stock Position

PYPL is currently trading approximately 3% above its 20-day moving average of $53.45. However, shares remain roughly 3% beneath the 50-day average of $56.79, positioning the stock in what technical analysts describe as an indecision zone.

The broader technical outlook appears more constructive. Shares are trading approximately 8% above the 100-day moving average and 9% above the 200-day moving average.

The relative strength index (RSI) currently registers at 50.75. This reading indicates a neutral position, showing neither overbought nor oversold conditions.

Moving average alignment presents a mixed technical picture. The 20-day moving average continues trading below the 50-day average, which technical traders interpret as a short-term bearish indicator.

However, the 50-day moving average maintains its position above the 200-day average after completing a golden cross in August. This configuration is generally interpreted as a long-term bullish signal.

Technical analysts are monitoring whether PYPL can successfully break above and sustain levels above the 50-day moving average. Successfully accomplishing this would transform Friday’s rally into a more sustainable upward move.

Critical resistance exists at $59.50, representing a ceiling associated with a recent consolidation zone. Important support is located at $52, positioned near where the 20-day and 200-day moving averages intersect.

In analyst action, Deutsche Bank elevated its price target on PayPal from $50 to $55 on Friday. The firm maintained its Hold rating on the stock.

PayPal shares were trading up 4.80% at $55.13 at the time of publication Friday.
