Morgan Stanley: Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX Partnership Signals Physical AI Revolution
Key Takeaways
- Morgan Stanley analysts identify growing integration between Tesla and SpaceX across artificial intelligence, energy infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing operations.
- Analysis of SpaceX’s S-1 registration reveals 71 Tesla mentions, encompassing collaborative projects and related-party business transactions.
- The Musk-led enterprises share infrastructure across semiconductor development, energy storage, satellite communications, robotics platforms, and AI systems.
- SpaceX has reportedly acquired over half a billion dollars in Tesla Megapack batteries and Cybertrucks throughout 2025.
- Morgan Stanley identifies physical AI applications—encompassing robotics and autonomous technologies—as a strategic convergence opportunity for both organizations.
The strategic relationship between Tesla and SpaceX is expanding significantly across artificial intelligence infrastructure, computational resources, energy systems, and manufacturing capabilities, according to recent analysis from Morgan Stanley.
A research team headed by analyst Adam Jonas noted that both organizations under Elon Musk’s leadership are increasingly pooling technological assets, human capital, and operational infrastructure while advancing what the investment bank characterizes as physical AI systems.
Physical AI encompasses artificial intelligence deployed in tangible applications including robotic systems, self-driving vehicles, industrial manufacturing platforms, and electrical grid infrastructure.
Morgan Stanley’s assessment suggests the Tesla-SpaceX relationship has evolved beyond simple supplier-customer transactions.
S-1 Registration Document Reveals Extensive Cross-Company References
Morgan Stanley’s examination identified 71 distinct Tesla references throughout SpaceX’s S-1 registration filing.
Approximately 34% of these mentions related to active collaborative initiatives between the companies, while 41% addressed corporate governance matters and related-party commercial arrangements.
The investment bank specifically noted Terafab, an ambitious semiconductor production initiative under development in Texas alongside Intel.
Published estimates place the facility’s complete construction budget above $119 billion.
SpaceX has emerged as a significant customer for Tesla’s commercial products.
Morgan Stanley documented $506 million in Tesla Megapack energy storage acquisitions and $131 million in Cybertruck purchases throughout 2025.
These Tesla products reportedly support SpaceX’s Colossus artificial intelligence computing infrastructure.
The companies are also jointly developing an AI agent platform under the name Macrohard.
Both enterprises have independently established targets for 100 gigawatts of annual domestic solar manufacturing capacity.
Satellite Connectivity and Computing Infrastructure Create Symbiotic Relationship
Morgan Stanley emphasized the bilateral exchange of computational power and connectivity infrastructure between the two organizations.
SpaceX supplies Tesla with ground-based computing capacity projected to achieve 4.9 gigawatts by late 2027.
This terrestrial computational infrastructure could expand to 15.3 gigawatts by 2031, based on projections referenced in Morgan Stanley’s analysis.
SpaceX additionally provides orbital satellite connectivity through its Starlink network.
Tesla intends to incorporate Starlink connectivity throughout its vehicle portfolio, starting with the Cybercab autonomous taxi.
In exchange, Tesla supplies SpaceX with energy storage solutions, manufacturing expertise, and robotics technology.
Morgan Stanley suggested Tesla’s humanoid robots could function as distributed data gathering platforms and decentralized computing nodes.
Tesla’s manufacturing operations operate at substantially greater scale, employing over 135,000 workers according to the research report.
This represents more than six times the workforce size of SpaceX.
Investment Bank Emphasizes Physical AI Applications
Morgan Stanley anticipates that investor focus will progressively migrate toward artificial intelligence implementations beyond large language models.
The financial institution noted that robotics, autonomous transportation, and other tangible AI systems remain comparatively underdeveloped relative to the conversational AI market.
Neither Tesla nor SpaceX positions itself as a primary developer of cutting-edge language models.
Instead, Morgan Stanley views their combined capabilities in robotics, energy infrastructure, satellite communications, semiconductor technology, and computing as strategically aligned with physical AI opportunities.
The bank indicated both companies could pursue these market opportunities independently or through enhanced collaborative arrangements.
Currently, the analysis represents Morgan Stanley’s forward-looking projections rather than disclosed strategic initiatives, and the ultimate commercial value of the companies’ deepening relationship remains to be determined.
