Spain's Manufacturing Sector Shows Growth Amid Rising Price Pressures

Spain's manufacturing sector returned to growth in September, with the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rising to 51.0, surpassing expectations of 50.1 and up from 49.5 in August. Despite this positive shift, the underlying performance of the sector remains subdued, as new work continued to decline amid ongoing uncertainty and increasing prices, particularly for energy.

New order inflows fell for the fifth consecutive month, although the rate of decline was marginal. Manufacturers reported that rising prices were negatively impacting demand, with both input and output prices increasing at accelerated rates. Input cost inflation reached its highest level in four months, prompting companies to raise their charges, which in turn led to output price inflation hitting a three-month high, albeit constrained by competitive pressures.

Supply-side challenges also persisted, contributing to inflationary pressures within the economy. Average lead times for the delivery of inputs lengthened significantly, attributed to delays in key maritime shipping routes and a general lack of stock among vendors. While this data provides insight into Spain's manufacturing landscape, its implications for the European Central Bank's (ECB) outlook are limited without considering broader trends across the Eurozone.
