Anthropic seeks rehearing of appeal over Pentagon "supply chain risk" designation

PANews reported on October 14, citing CNBC, that Anthropic filed a petition on October 13 (ET) with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, seeking a rehearing of its appeal over the Pentagon's "supply chain risk" designation. In March, the U.S. Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, barring defense contractors from using its technology in work with the DoD; in September, the court's panel upheld the designation by a 2-1 vote. Anthropic's lawyers said in the filing that the company was blacklisted because it refused to allow its models to be used for mass surveillance of U.S. citizens or lethal autonomous weapons, and argued the court overlooked direct evidence that the designation was retaliation for Anthropic's public statements on AI safety.
