OpenAI Engineer Arrested for Allegedly Installing Hidden Recording Devices

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old engineer at OpenAI, was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on October 9, 2026, for allegedly installing hidden recording devices in the company's office. Alfozan, who has been with OpenAI since July 2025, is accused of using devices to intercept oral communications. He made his initial court appearance on Tuesday following the arrest.

The investigation began after OpenAI discovered a sophisticated recording device hidden in the office, which was found plugged into a USB port on the back of a television and wrapped in paper towels. The device was reportedly installed around September 28, 2026, and its contents were encrypted. Surveillance footage indicated that Alfozan was seen near the conference room where the device was located, despite lacking the authority to enter that area or attend the meetings held there, which typically involved sensitive information.

OpenAI stated that it referred the matter to the FBI and expressed gratitude for the prompt action taken by law enforcement. The company utilized its own artificial intelligence model to analyze the hidden device and trace its origin back to an employee. The criminal complaint also revealed that Alfozan had previously used internal tools to gather information about the office layout and meeting schedules, raising further suspicions regarding his intentions.
