Asian Semiconductor Stocks Decline Amid Financing Concerns

Asian semiconductor stocks experienced a significant decline on Monday, with the Bloomberg Asia Chip Index falling over 2%, marking its lowest point since July. Major companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), SK Hynix, and Advantest contributed to this downturn. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index saw its largest weekly drop since October 2008, plummeting more than 3% at one point before recovering slightly. The Nikkei 225 index in Japan fell by 2.3%, while the Taiwan Weighted Index also dropped by 2%.

Market concerns are driven by two primary factors. Firstly, there is growing uncertainty regarding financing for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the United States, particularly with questions surrounding CoreWeave's financing capabilities and a cooling of initial public offering (IPO) expectations for companies like Anthropic and Nscale. Secondly, the Chinese AI company DeepSeek announced a new model update over the weekend, which boasts faster operation speeds and lower resource consumption. This development has raised alarms about a potential decrease in storage capacity needed for AI models, which could negatively impact chip demand.

Kang DaeKwun, CEO of Life Asset Management, highlighted the high level of market uncertainty, complicating predictions about when the Korean stock market might stabilize. He noted that the profitability of Korean chip manufacturers is closely tied to ongoing investments in AI infrastructure by U.S. companies. This week, earnings reports from major technology firms such as Meta and Tesla will be closely monitored as indicators of the growth momentum in AI capital expenditures.
