German Savings Banks Launch Cryptocurrency Trading for Institutional Clients

The German Savings Banks and Giro Association (DSGV) announced the official entry of the German Savings Banks (Sparkassen) into the cryptocurrency trading sector. As of this Monday, institutional clients can directly buy and sell digital assets, including Bitcoin, through their existing official app. This new trading service is supported by Dekabank, the securities service provider for the savings banks, and involves custody of crypto assets in collaboration with the Stuttgart Stock Exchange.

The initial offerings include popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Solana, and Polygon. The service features a low transaction fee of 0.99 euros per order, allowing users to engage in crypto trading without the need for a traditional securities account. This pricing strategy aims to compete with emerging mobile banks like N26 and Trade Republic. Each savings bank will determine its own launch schedule, with expectations that 30 to 40 institutions will join the initiative monthly, targeting widespread availability by the first half of 2027.

Despite the cautious stance historically taken by the German Savings Banks regarding cryptocurrencies, the decision to enter the market was driven by strong customer demand and the presence of a reliable regulatory framework in Europe. Joachim Schmalzl, a member of the DSGV management, emphasized that the product is designed for clients wishing to independently manage their crypto assets, while the banks will not provide investment advice or engage in extensive marketing during the initial phase. The DSGV continues to warn clients about the speculative nature of cryptocurrencies, highlighting the risks of extreme price fluctuations and potential total loss. Traditional investments and financial consulting remain the core focus of the savings banks.
