Where Did the $385 Million in USD1 Redemptions Come From?
OnChain Benchmark examined USD1 supply directly through blockchain contracts, finding that Ethereum accounted for $184.60 million in net redemptions across 63 token burns. BNB Chain recorded another $200.43 million across 12 burns. The BNB Chain activity was particularly concentrated. Approximately $200 million of the $200.50 million sent for redemption originated from one unidentified address, generally through transactions ranging from $30 million to $50 million. That amount represented roughly 52% of the combined supply reduction across the two networks. However, the research did not establish whether the address represented a single investor, institutional treasury, custodian or intermediary acting for multiple clients. On Ethereum, more than 99% of redeemed tokens passed through a wallet labeled as BitGo, USD1's current issuer and custodian. Those transfers likewise do not identify the original beneficial owners.Solana supply remained approximately $1.42 billion during the October 6–15 research period, with no offsetting issuance. Transfers between Ethereum and BNB Chain totaled less than $1 million, indicating that the supply reduction was not simply a redistribution between those networks.Investor Takeaway
The concentration of redemption activity demonstrates how quickly a relatively small number of large wallet flows can alter USD1's circulating supply. It does not establish that a single investor withdrew the funds or that the redemptions resulted from concerns about the stablecoin's backing.
Why Is USD1 Shrinking Faster Than Other Stablecoins?
USD1's supply contraction outpaced several competing dollar-denominated stablecoins on Ethereum during the same nine-day period.OnChain Benchmark measured an 11.45% decline in Ethereum-based USD1 supply, compared with 4.93% for Ethena's USDe, 2.18% for Circle's USDC and 0.76% for circulating USDT. Meanwhile, PYUSD and RLUSD expanded by 2.57% and 6.11%, respectively. The differences suggest that broader cryptocurrency market weakness cannot fully explain USD1's relative contraction. Concentrated treasury movements, changing institutional allocations and exchange-related liquidity decisions are possible explanations, but the available blockchain evidence does not establish which factors drove the withdrawals.Holder concentration has previously attracted attention. FinanceFeeds reported in February that Binance-linked wallets held approximately 87% of USD1 supply, reflecting the importance of exchange distribution to the stablecoin's growth.World Liberty has since pursued additional commercial uses, including a partnership with payments infrastructure provider Mesh intended to expand USD1 acceptance among online merchants.Whether those integrations generate durable circulating balances remains uncertain. Distribution agreements can expand access without necessarily creating sustained demand to hold the stablecoin.Did USD1 Lose Its Peg or Show Signs of Reserve Stress?
Despite the redemptions, USD1 traded between approximately $0.998 and $1.000 during the October 6–15 period examined by OnChain Benchmark. The research found no evidence of a sustained depegging event. This distinction matters because a stablecoin's market capitalization can decline substantially even while its dollar value remains stable. When tokens are redeemed and destroyed, outstanding supply falls without requiring the market price of the remaining tokens to decline.World Liberty's proof-of-reserves dashboard showed approximately $4.01 billion in reserve assets on October 19. However, the dashboard could not display a complete collateralization ratio because supply feeds for several supported networks were unavailable. An earlier reserve report covering August 31 identified approximately $4.20 billion in outstanding USD1 matched by reserve assets. That historical report does not independently establish the reserve position following October's redemptions. The combination of stable pricing and successful token burns is consistent with an orderly reduction in supply, although it is not a substitute for complete, independently verified reserve and redemption-liquidity disclosures.Investor Takeaway
A $401 million reduction in market capitalization should not be interpreted as an equivalent loss suffered by USD1 holders. The more relevant indicators of stablecoin stability are redemption execution, dollar-peg performance, reserve coverage and the availability of liquid assets during large withdrawals.
What Does the Planned BitGo Issuer Transition Mean?
The redemptions arrive as World Liberty Financial prepares to internalize USD1 issuance through World Liberty Trust Company, which received preliminary conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on August 14.Under the proposed structure, the trust company would assume issuance, redemption, reserve management and custody responsibilities currently handled by BitGo. However, the OCC approval remains preliminary, and the institution must satisfy preopening requirements before receiving authorization to operate. The regulatory environment has also become more contentious. The Independent Community Bankers of America filed a lawsuit in October challenging the OCC's broader authority to authorize certain cryptocurrency-focused national trust bank activities. The action challenges the regulatory framework rather than constituting a court ruling against World Liberty's specific charter. For World Liberty, bringing issuance in-house could provide greater control over reserves and redemption infrastructure, but it would also transfer operational responsibilities from an established third-party issuer to the new institution. The next measures of USD1's resilience will be whether circulating supply stabilizes, whether fresh issuance offsets October's withdrawals, and whether subsequent reserve attestations reconcile outstanding tokens with backing assets.Investor Takeaway
World Liberty's planned issuer transition introduces an additional operational and regulatory consideration while USD1's supply is contracting. Investors and institutional counterparties should focus on the final charter authorization, updated reserve reporting and whether the stablecoin can diversify demand beyond concentrated large-wallet activity.
