Berkshire Hathaway's New CEO Greg Abel Invests $39 Billion in Stocks

Greg Abel, the newly appointed CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has made a significant shift in the company's investment strategy, deploying approximately $39.4 billion into equity purchases in the first six months of 2026. This investment marks a dramatic increase compared to the $7.1 billion invested during the same period in 2025 under former CEO Warren Buffett, indicating a more aggressive approach to capital allocation in the post-Buffett era.

Abel officially took over on January 1, 2026, inheriting a substantial cash reserve of nearly $397 billion. This cash hoard had been built up over years as Buffett focused on selling more than buying. In a notable change, Berkshire became a net buyer of stocks in the second quarter of 2026 for the first time in over three years, acquiring $23.5 billion in marketable equities and executing share buybacks worth approximately $4.2 to $4.5 billion.

A key highlight of Abel's investment strategy has been the substantial increase in Berkshire's stake in Alphabet, Google's parent company. The company tripled its Alphabet holdings in the first quarter of 2026 and added around $17 billion more in the second quarter, including a $10 billion private placement. By early September 2026, Berkshire's total investment in Alphabet reached approximately $36.6 billion, making it one of the conglomerate's largest holdings. Abel has also invested in established companies like Delta Air Lines, indicating a balanced approach to investment.
