Binance Co-Founder Advocates for Transparent Hardware Wallets Following Tampering Incident

Changpeng Zhao, co-founder of Binance, has proposed that all hardware wallets should be manufactured with transparent casings to allow users to visually inspect for signs of tampering. This suggestion comes in the wake of reports regarding a suspected supply-chain attack involving Ledger devices sold by a Southeast Asian reseller, CryptoBilis, which resulted in losses estimated at $86 million.

Zhao's comments were made on October 14, 2026, shortly after the emergence of a new tampering-detection tool called tampered.app, designed to identify anomalies in hardware wallets from various brands, including Ledger, OneKey, and Trezor. He emphasized that the tampering issue appears to be isolated to a single vendor rather than indicative of a systemic flaw in Ledger's products, asserting that the integrity of the devices themselves remains intact.

The concept of transparent hardware wallets is not entirely new; a prototype known as the Crystal wallet already features a see-through epoxy casing, allowing visibility of its internal components. Zhao's advocacy highlights the importance of sourcing devices from trusted channels and utilizing tools like tampered.app to ensure the security of cryptocurrency holdings. As Ledger continues its investigation into the reported tampering, the outcome will determine whether the issue is confined to CryptoBilis or if it signals a broader concern within the hardware wallet market.
