Bitcoin Surges to $86,000 Amid Massive Short Squeeze
Bitcoin's price reached $86,000, marking its highest level in eight months, following a significant short squeeze that liquidated over $648 million in short positions within a single day. This surge allowed Bitcoin to break through a resistance zone that had previously hindered its price movement for months, specifically between $82,000 and $86,000, identified by analytics firm Glassnode as a critical short-liquidation wall.
The recent price increase has also seen long-term holders accumulating approximately 1.07 million Bitcoin, with cost bases in the $83,000 to $86,000 range. This shift means that many investors are now in profit, which historically tends to reduce selling pressure as holders are less likely to sell when their investments are performing well. Additionally, the breakeven point for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is estimated to be between $85,638 and $86,000, indicating that ETF investors are also benefiting from the price rise.
Despite the positive momentum, analysts have raised concerns about weak spot demand above the $86,000 mark. The current rally has been largely driven by derivatives liquidations and ETF inflows rather than organic buying on exchanges. Market participants are advised to monitor trading volume and liquidity closely, as high volume with tight spreads would indicate genuine buyer interest, while thin volume with wide spreads could suggest the rally is losing steam.
