Bitcoin Surpasses 50-Week Moving Average for First Time Since November 2025

Bitcoin closed the week of September 20, 2026, at $81,159, marking its first weekly close above the 50-week moving average since November 2025. This close is approximately 3% above the moving average, which stands at roughly $78,788. The achievement ends a 45-week period during which Bitcoin traded below this significant technical threshold, a key indicator closely monitored by market participants.

The surge that led to this breakout occurred on September 18, when Bitcoin experienced a 6% increase in a single day, briefly exceeding $81,200. This price movement was accompanied by increased activity from large investors, often referred to as 'whales', and a wave of short liquidations, contributing to the upward momentum.

Bitcoin's journey to this point has been notable, particularly after hitting a cycle low of approximately $58,525 on June 30, 2026, which represented a 53% decline from its peak above $124,000 in October 2025. The recent close indicates a recovery of about 39% from that low in less than three months, highlighting a significant rebound in market sentiment.

Historically, reclaiming the 50-week moving average has been a positive signal for Bitcoin. Analysis by Galaxy Research indicates that in 11 out of 13 comparable instances, Bitcoin did not fall to new cycle lows after reclaiming this level. Observers are now keenly watching to see if Bitcoin can maintain its position above the moving average in the coming weeks, as consecutive weekly closes above this threshold could further confirm a bullish trend.
