British Pound Hits One-Month Low Amid Rising Oil Prices and Fed Rate Speculation

On September 14, the British pound fell to $1.3474 against the US dollar, marking its lowest level since August 7. This decline of 0.4% is attributed more to rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions than to the performance of the UK economy itself.

Brent crude oil prices surged by 3% to $108 per barrel, driven by concerns over supply disruptions following Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia and the shutdown of a crucial Saudi pipeline. These developments have led investors to seek the safety of dollar-denominated assets, negatively impacting the pound, euro, and yen.

Despite the UK reporting a stronger-than-expected GDP growth of 0.4% for July, which exceeded market predictions of flat growth, the currency markets remained focused on broader economic factors. Analysts suggested that the positive GDP data could prompt the Bank of England to consider further monetary tightening, but the immediate influence of rising oil prices and expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike overshadowed this news.

The Federal Reserve is set to meet on September 16, with markets anticipating a 75% chance of an interest rate increase. Such a move would enhance the attractiveness of dollar-denominated assets, potentially exerting further pressure on the pound. Additionally, ongoing geopolitical tensions and the implications of rising oil prices continue to complicate the UK's economic landscape, as the country is a net energy importer.
