CME Group Suspends Plans for 24/7 Crude Oil Futures Contract

CME Group Inc., a leading derivatives marketplace based in the United States, has announced the suspension of its plans to introduce a 24/7 crude oil futures contract. This decision comes after significant opposition from industry participants who expressed concerns regarding the potential impact on market stability and pricing.

Market participants highlighted that the lack of liquidity during weekends could lead to distortions in the pricing of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil. Additionally, there were worries that continuous trading would place increased demands on staffing, commercial hedging, and margin calls during non-business hours, which could complicate operations for many firms.

CME Group's CEO Terry Duffy indicated that extensive discussions with core market participants revealed a consensus on the need for caution. He emphasized that the introduction of around-the-clock energy trading should not be rushed, as it could result in unforeseen consequences and additional risks to the market.
