Coinbase Stock Surges 12% Following Bitcoin Breakout and Regulatory Developments
Coinbase Global Inc. saw its stock price increase by 12% on September 18, 2026, following a significant rise in Bitcoin, which surpassed $80,000 for the first time in weeks. This surge made Coinbase the top performer in the S&P 500 for that trading session, outpacing gains from other companies such as Robinhood and SanDisk.
The stock's rally came after a challenging period, including a 9% drop earlier in the week when the U.S. Senate voted against advancing the CLARITY Act, a proposed bill aimed at providing a regulatory framework for digital assets. However, regulatory developments on September 17, including a five-year exemption from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) allowing platforms to trade tokenized versions of U.S. stocks, contributed to a more favorable market environment for Coinbase.
Analysts currently have a mixed outlook on Coinbase stock, with 18 buy ratings, three outperform ratings, 11 holds, one underperform, and one sell. The average target price for the stock is $202, which is only 4% above its closing price of $194 on September 18. This marks a significant decrease from earlier in the year when the average target was much higher, reflecting a tightening margin as the stock price has fluctuated.
