DeepSeek, a technology company, is partnering with Huawei to develop a new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) chips designed to operate independently of NVIDIA's computing power. This collaboration involves Huawei engineers working directly at DeepSeek's facilities to gain insights into the company's model architecture and algorithm requirements. The initial focus is on creating a chip compatible with the Ascend 950DT, which is part of Huawei's strategy to enhance domestic computing capabilities in China.
This initiative aligns with China's broader goal of decreasing reliance on American semiconductor technology amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The Ascend 950DT chip is expected to be released in 2027, although mass production may face delays until 2028 due to constraints from TSMC's foundry services and U.S. export controls.
To mitigate the ongoing chip shortage, DeepSeek is employing the TileLang programming language to navigate around CUDA restrictions, while also seeking to acquire NVIDIA's Blackwell chips through third-party data centers. Additionally, DeepSeek is assembling a dedicated chip development team and has commenced testing clusters that utilize over 1,000 processors, indicating a significant investment in advancing its AI capabilities.
