Ethereum DeFi Protocols Experience Surge in Wallet Creation Amid Declining Network Activity
Ethereum's network activity has seen a significant decline, with daily active addresses dropping from over 1.5 million in January to approximately 544,000 by July, a decrease of nearly 64%. Despite this downturn, decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols built on the Ethereum network, such as Aave, are witnessing a notable increase in new wallet creation. On June 30, Aave recorded 1,806 new wallets, marking its highest daily total since October 2021.
The broader Ethereum network averaged 327,000 new addresses per day in mid-January, with a peak of nearly 394,000 on a single day, largely driven by the Fusaka upgrade that reduced transaction fees and made stablecoin transfers more affordable. In contrast, the total value locked in Ethereum's DeFi ecosystem remained stable at around $41 billion as of July, indicating resilience in the face of declining network metrics.
The growth in DeFi wallets can be attributed to the unique dynamics of lending protocols like Aave, where users typically maintain their positions for extended periods. The reduction in gas fees from the Fusaka upgrade has also lowered barriers for participation, allowing users who may have previously been deterred by high transaction costs to engage in DeFi activities. This shift suggests a change in the user base, with a focus on financial product utilization rather than speculative activities.
