Ledger Users Reported Losses Exceeding $86 Million in Suspected Exploit

On October 9, 2026, reports emerged indicating that users of Ledger hardware wallets may have lost over $86 million due to a suspected coordinated attack. On-chain analyst Specter traced the stolen funds across major blockchain networks, including Ethereum, TRON, and Bitcoin, suggesting a systematic campaign rather than isolated incidents.

The analysis revealed that a specific Bitcoin address linked to the theft received over 211 BTC, which had not been moved at the time of the report. The exact method of the exploit remains unclear, with speculation ranging from vulnerabilities in Ledger's hardware or firmware to phishing attacks that could have compromised users' seed phrases.

This incident follows a troubling trend in hardware wallet security, as earlier in 2026, a fraudulent Ledger Live app on the Apple App Store drained approximately $9.5 million from users. Additionally, a flaw in the Zilliqa Ledger app and a seed-generation issue in Coldcard hardware wallets resulted in significant losses, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the cryptocurrency space. As the situation develops, users are advised to remain vigilant and verify software sources to mitigate risks.
