MARA Moves 1,000 Bitcoin to Exchanges and Sparks Alarm

Bitcoin mining company MARA Holdings transferred 1,000 BTC worth approximately $82.8 million to exchanges Binance and Gate over the past five days, blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain reported on Oct. 19, raising questions about whether the company is preparing another sale from its shrinking reserves. The transfer represents approximately 4% of the 26,307 BTC MARA held in unrestricted Bitcoin holdings as of June 30, 2026.The deposits follow a separate transfer of 996 BTC worth roughly $81 million to a wallet linked to Galaxy Digital on Oct. 8, which crypto.news reported at the time. Neither movement has been confirmed as a completed sale by MARA, and the company has not publicly disclosed the purpose of the latest transactions.

MARA Sold $1.63 Billion in Bitcoin During the First Half of 2026

The exchange activity follows a period of aggressive Bitcoin liquidation. MARA sold approximately 23,093 BTC for roughly $1.63 billion during the first six months of 2026, according to its financial disclosures. First-quarter sales accounted for 20,880 BTC at an average price of approximately $70,137 per coin, generating nearly $1.5 billion. The company said proceeds supported the repurchase of convertible senior notes due in 2030 and 2031, reducing outstanding convertible debt by approximately 30% and generating around $88.1 million in savings before transaction costs. By June 30, MARA held 35,577 BTC, down from 53,822 BTC at the end of December 2025.Bitcoin sales slowed sharply in the second quarter: MARA sold 2,213 BTC at an average price of approximately $73,078, compared with 20,880 BTC sold in the first quarter.

The Two Transfers Total Nearly $164 Million in Bitcoin Movements

The combined Oct. 8 and Oct. 19 movements total approximately 1,996 BTC valued at roughly $164 million based on published estimates. MARA has previously acknowledged that wallet movements can reflect activities beyond outright sales. The latest deposits stand out because Bitcoin sales slowed sharply in the second quarter, when the company sold just 2,213 BTC after selling 20,880 BTC in the first quarter. In its third-quarter 2025 shareholder letter, the company disclosed that it had begun actively managing a portion of its Bitcoin holdings through options, futures, swaps, and spot trading. MARA also pledged 18,750 BTC as initial collateral for two credit facilities providing $600 million in new borrowing in August, involving Coinbase Credit and Two Prime Lending. This trading strategy means exchange deposits could support trading or treasury management activities rather than signal an outright sale.At the end of June, 9,270 BTC was already allocated to the company's digital asset management strategy, with 4,742 BTC loaned to counterparties and 4,528 BTC pledged as collateral, according to company filings.MARA's second-quarter results showed revenue falling 27% year over year to $174.9 million with a net loss of $611.3 million. The company reports its next quarterly earnings in November, which should clarify whether the latest exchange deposits were sales or movements related to lending, collateral, or other treasury operations. MARA's monetization decisions remain subject to market conditions and capital allocation priorities, the company has stated.
