Interactive Brokers Launches Location-Specific Hurricane Contracts
Interactive Brokers has initiated a pilot program for location-specific hurricane contracts on its ForecastEx platform, designed to assist traders in pricing and hedging storm risks at individual coastal locations. The pilot, which took place during Hurricane Isaias, marked the first live test of these contracts, which are linked to the maximum wind gust speeds recorded at 25 coastal sites during Atlantic storms.
The contracts allow traders to select wind gust thresholds ranging from 70 mph to 200 mph in 10 mph increments. They become active only when forecasts indicate at least a 5% chance of gusts exceeding 70 mph at a specific location. This innovative approach aims to provide more immediate and granular risk management options compared to traditional hurricane contracts, which have been offered by Interactive Brokers since May 2025.
The contracts are designed to settle within days after a storm, utilizing a unique measurement of 3-second gust maxima rather than the conventional 1-minute sustained wind speeds typically reported in hurricane coverage. This method aims to provide clearer and faster insights for risk managers regarding their exposure following a storm. However, concerns regarding liquidity remain, as the introduction of 25 separate coastal markets per storm may dilute trading activity. Reask, a catastrophe-modeling firm, supplies the forecast probabilities and post-storm wind gust reconstructions necessary for the contract's operation.
