Zoom Rolls Out Proof of Human Badges to Fight Fakes

Zoom enterprise customers can now verify that video call participants are real people after World rolled out biometric verification badges globally through the Zoom Marketplace on Oct. 18. The Sam Altman-backed project's system compares an image captured by its iris-scanning Orb, a live selfie, and the participant's video feed before displaying a "Human Badge" visible to other meeting participants.World first announced its Zoom integration in April during limited beta testing with VanEck Funds. The company also named Bain Capital, Pantera Capital and other financial firms as initial design partners for its broader identity verification technology, Cointelegraph reported.

AI Deepfake Fraud Has Already Cost Millions

The rollout follows documented incidents where AI-generated impersonation caused substantial financial losses. In 2024, an employee at engineering firm Arup transferred approximately $25 million after scammers impersonated executives during a video conference, according to Cointelegraph's reporting. In February, suspected North Korea-linked hackers used fabricated video feeds in fake Zoom meetings to trick crypto and fintech companies into installing malware.World stated that its Zoom integration is designed to protect sensitive, high-stakes conversations by confirming that a real and unique human is present, Fortune reported. Financial firms have emerged as early adopters, reflecting the sector's exposure to deepfake-enabled social engineering attacks.

The Verification Adds A Biometric Layer Without Replacing Zoom's Own Security

World's system operates as a third-party verification layer on top of Zoom's existing enterprise security features. The badge confirms that a participant has previously registered a biometric identity through the company's Orb hardware and that their live video matches the stored template. The approach shifts verification from organizational credentials to individual biometric proof, a distinction that matters when attackers can spoof a company email or replicate a face with AI-generated video. The global rollout moves biometric proof-of-humanity technology from crypto-native identity applications into mainstream corporate infrastructure.World ID for Zoom is now available to enterprise customers through the Zoom Marketplace. Adoption beyond the initial financial-sector design partners will test whether proof-of-humanity verification becomes a standard layer in corporate video communications or remains confined to high-security use cases.
