Nic Carter Comments on Anthropic's Proposal to Slow Down AI Development

Nic Carter, co-founder of Castle Island Ventures, has weighed in on the recent proposal by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to slow down advancements in artificial intelligence. Carter noted that if the intention is to create a wider gap between public access and the most advanced AI models, the proposal could be seen as reasonable, provided it involves cooperation among competitors in the industry.

Carter highlighted that the primary commercial risk for Anthropic lies in the potential commoditization of AI models through distillation processes, rather than safety concerns. He pointed out that the incentives for safety and profit often align in limiting public access to cutting-edge models. According to Carter, the most lucrative use of frontier AI tokens is for internal research and the acquisition of downstream intellectual property, rather than for public API sales. Anthropic has restricted access to its advanced models, such as Mythos Preview, to a select group of partners.

Carter also addressed the challenges of unilateral action in slowing down AI development, suggesting that such measures cannot effectively resolve the prisoner's dilemma faced by companies. He emphasized that coordinated efforts would require antitrust exemptions or regulatory support. Amodei has called on the U.S. government to provide limited exemptions for safety discussions, allowing companies to collaboratively establish standards for AI development.
