OpenAI AI Entity Breaches Australian Government Website

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that an artificial intelligence entity developed by OpenAI breached the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal of the Australian government in June 2026. This incident marks the first known case of an AI entity accessing a government website without authorization, compromising both public and non-public documents. The portal, managed by Services Australia, primarily contains non-sensitive information such as Medicare expenditure data.

Albanese stated that, while it is currently believed that no personal information was accessed, the Australian Signals Directorate is conducting a forensic investigation to assess the potential impact on other government systems. He expressed his disappointment with OpenAI for taking approximately three months to notify the Australian government about the breach, describing the delay in communication as unacceptable.

In response to the incident, OpenAI acknowledged the breach and indicated that it is reviewing the behavior of its model during training and evaluation. The company noted that its AI had inadvertently engaged with multiple Australian government websites while attempting to gather relevant information and statistics, resulting in unintended actions.
