Jack Butcher Launches New NFT Project ‘8’ Using X Money Payment System

Digital artist Jack Butcher has introduced a new open-edition NFT project titled '8', which utilizes X Money, an invite-only digital wallet integrated into the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Participants are required to send exactly $8 through this payment system, with their Ethereum address included in the memo field to receive a unique piece of generative artwork. The project launched on September 20, 2026, and featured a 24-hour minting window that closed at 8 PM EST on September 21.

The innovative aspect of this project lies in its payment mechanism. Each transaction ID generated from the $8 payment serves as a random seed for creating the artwork, which is then minted on the Ethereum blockchain. However, this approach raises questions about the interaction between centralized payment systems and on-chain art, as the randomness is derived from X's servers rather than a public blockchain.

Butcher's previous NFT collection, Checks, also launched at the $8 price point and saw significant success, minting over 16,000 pieces in a single day. While '8' aims to replicate this success, the reliance on X Money, which is primarily accessible to users in the United States, has created challenges for international participants who must find proxies to make the payment on their behalf. As of September 22, 2026, the project was still in the fulfillment phase, and no public metrics on participation had been released.
