Ripple Custody Expands Support for Canton Network with New Update
Ripple Custody has announced the addition of support for the Canton Network, allowing institutional clients to hold and transfer Canton assets directly within their existing custody platform. This feature was introduced in version 1.43, which launched on October 5, 2026, and includes the ability to manage Canton Coin, also known as Amulet, along with any tokens issued under the CIP-56 standard through the Digital Asset Registry.
The new integration utilizes a bring-your-own-validator (BYOV) model, enabling clients to connect their custody setup to validators they or their node providers operate. This approach ensures that signing keys remain secure within the clients' own vaults, such as hardware security modules or key management services, rather than being held by Ripple. Additionally, existing custody policies and approval workflows are maintained for all transactions involving Canton assets.
Canton is recognized for its appeal to regulated financial institutions, offering features like sub-transaction privacy and a unique 'network of networks' structure, which limits data visibility to relevant participants. Major financial entities, including Goldman Sachs and BNY Mellon, have adopted Canton infrastructure for managing tokenized assets. The integration of Canton support into Ripple Custody is expected to streamline asset management for institutions, allowing them to consolidate their digital holdings without the need for a separate custodian for Canton assets. However, current limitations include API-only access and the absence of support for more complex transaction types, which may restrict some advanced use cases.
