South Korea's Ministry of Finance and Economy Discusses Virtual Asset Taxation with Exchanges

The South Korean Ministry of Finance and Economy recently held a seminar focused on virtual asset taxation, engaging with five major cryptocurrency exchanges: Dunamu, Bithumb, DigitalX, Coinone, and Streami. The discussions also included representatives from the Financial Services Commission, addressing the current taxation framework, market conditions, and tax preparation efforts. However, no definitive decisions were reached regarding the potential postponement or abolition of the tax.

South Korea's virtual asset taxation policy was initially established in 2020, with its implementation timeline pushed back multiple times. Originally set for 2022, the tax has been rescheduled for 2023, 2025, and now 2027. The National Tax Service is currently working on the specifics of the tax, but key issues, such as the treatment of staking, remain unresolved and require further negotiation with the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

With the possibility of an announcement regarding the tax details expected next month, stakeholders are aware that there will be limited time—approximately two months—before the latest planned implementation date.
