Lido Engineer Raises Concerns Over Staking Deposit Security After Glamsterdam Upgrade
Dmitry Gusakov, the engineering lead of the Ethereum liquid staking protocol Lido, expressed concerns regarding potential vulnerabilities introduced by the recent Glamsterdam upgrade at the ACDC #189 developer conference. He highlighted that the new one-time builder access mechanism could disrupt the existing deposit protection logic of the staking protocol, potentially allowing for the hijacking of staking deposits due to multiple deposits sharing the same validator public key.
Under Ethereum's current deposit rules, the first valid deposit establishes the withdrawal credential, a feature that staking protocols typically use to prevent credential manipulation. However, the Glamsterdam upgrade may alter how subsequent pending deposits are interpreted during the fork transition period, which could result in scenarios where the validator does not appear, leading to deposited ETH being credited to the builder instead.
Lido has proposed a solution to maintain a clear distinction between validator deposits and builder deposits during this one-time access process. However, core developers have rejected this modification, citing timing issues, as the Sepolia testnet has already been activated under existing specifications. Altering the behavior at this stage could necessitate redeploying Sepolia and conducting further testing, raising concerns about the impact on deposits currently in the queue.
