Lido Engineer Warns of Staking Deposit Hijack Risk During Ethereum Upgrade
Dima Gusakov, Head of Engineering at Lido Finance, has raised concerns about a potential vulnerability during the upcoming Glamsterdam hard fork of the Ethereum network. On October 20, 2026, Gusakov warned that malicious node operators could exploit a narrow window during the transition to redirect staker ETH, potentially leading to significant losses for those participating in delegated staking protocols.
The Glamsterdam upgrade introduces builder deposits that utilize a specific type of withdrawal credential, marked with the 0xB0 prefix. This change creates a shared deposit queue for builder and validator deposits, which could allow an attacker to preemptively claim ETH intended for a staker's validator. If successful, the attack would credit the deposit to the attacker's account while preventing the staker's validator from activating.
A proposed fix to address this issue, which involved implementing pre-deposit checks, was closed as 'not planned' in the Ethereum consensus-specs repository. This decision shifts the responsibility for safeguarding deposits to individual staking protocols rather than the core Ethereum specification. Lido has previously faced similar challenges and has established a Deposit Security Module to oversee deposits, but the effectiveness of these measures against the new builder credentials remains uncertain.
The Glamsterdam upgrade is set to activate on the Hoodi testnet on October 26, 2026, with a mainnet launch targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. Staking providers are encouraged to test their deposit systems on the testnet to ensure they can effectively block any unauthorized builder deposits before the mainnet activation.
