Bank of Japan Expected to Raise Inflation Outlook While Keeping Interest Rates Steady

The Bank of Japan is anticipated to revise its inflation forecasts for the upcoming fiscal year, according to four informed sources. This adjustment is expected to be influenced by rising oil prices, which are creating more persistent price pressures on the Japanese economy than previously anticipated. The updated forecasts are set to be released later this month.

Despite the potential increase in inflation expectations, the Bank of Japan is likely to maintain its current interest rates during the two-day policy meeting concluding on October 30. This decision follows a recent interest rate hike implemented last month. However, if the yen experiences a significant decline, which would increase import costs and overall inflation, the central bank may reconsider its stance.

In the quarterly report following the meeting, the Bank of Japan is expected to highlight the growing risks associated with inflation, potentially leaving the door open for another rate hike as early as December. One source noted that the rise in consumer prices may persist longer than initially expected, although there has not been a significant change in underlying inflation. This sentiment was echoed by two additional sources, indicating a consensus on the evolving economic landscape.
