Sui Foundation Invests $30 Million as DATA Network Transitions to New Protocol
The Sui Foundation has announced a $30 million investment to support the DATA Network's transition from its own blockchain to a native protocol on Sui. Previously known as Story Protocol, DATA Network will shut down its independent Layer 1 chain and integrate its operations with Sui, a move revealed by co-founder Eman Abio during Sui ecosystem events on October 8, 2026.
This strategic shift comes less than two years after DATA Network's launch as a standalone chain. The project will now focus on providing verifiable AI training data and will integrate with Walrus Protocol, a decentralized storage layer, to enhance data coordination and storage capabilities. DATA Network has already recorded over 250 million on-chain data registrations through various applications, including Kled and Numo, as of October 2026.
Originally launched in February 2025 to support programmable intellectual property and automated licensing, DATA Network pivoted towards AI data infrastructure in June 2026, rebranding from Story Protocol to the DATA Foundation. This change was driven by increasing demand from AI developers for datasets that are verifiable and ethically sourced. As the migration progresses, stakeholders will need clarity on how the DATA token will function post-transition and how existing applications will adapt to the new environment.
