“Transformative Role” of Cryptocurrencies: G20 Countries Discuss Digital Finance Regulation

      • G20 finance ministers and central bank governors recognized the “transformational role” of digital assets in driving economic growth.
      • They committed to advancing relevant regulatory frameworks.
      • The G20 is awaiting an FSB report on the cross-border implications of global stablecoin arrangements and the data sources behind them.

Finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of Twenty (G20), during a meeting in the US, outlined key plans for the crypto market and digital finance.

      Digital assets and stablecoins

Participants in the meeting recognized the “transformational role” that digital financial innovation, including digital assets, can play in supporting broad-based economic growth, as well as the key role of the private sector in driving these innovations. At the same time, the G20 emphasized the importance of safeguarding financial stability and trust in monetary and payment systems.

“We commit to advancing responsible and effective regulatory and supervisory frameworks that preserve financial stability, support economic growth, and create clear pathways for healthy digital financial innovation and innovation in digital assets,” the statement said.

On stablecoins, the G20 is awaiting an upcoming summary from the Financial Stability Board (FSB), which will include findings from reports on cross-border implications related to global stablecoin arrangements, as well as the data sources behind them, their availability, and potential challenges.

FATF and cryptocurrency: priority on effective implementation of standards

In a separate section, the G20 backed the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and urged countries to implement risk-based supervision to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

In particular, the G20 called on the FATF to take steps to ensure that jurisdictions with significant use of virtual assets effectively implement FATF standards for them — as a priority.

Participants also expressed concern about the growing threat of AI-enabled fraud and “scam compounds” — organized criminal networks that use cryptocurrencies at scale to launder proceeds from fraud. The G20 welcomed the FATF’s renewed focus on this issue and efforts to strengthen public-private partnerships and information sharing to detect and counter illicit finance “at high speed and at scale.”

      Cross-border payments and AI

In addition, the G20 reaffirmed its commitment to the Roadmap for Enhancing Cross-Border Payments and called for advancing initiatives to extend payment system operating hours and harmonize ISO 20022 data transmission standards.

The G20 recognized artificial intelligence as a general-purpose technology with a “profound impact on the global economy” and expects the FSB to finalize a document on sound practices for the responsible deployment of AI in the financial sector.

As a reminder, earlier the crypto bank Sygnum predicted that three G20 countries could add bitcoin to their state reserves in 2026.
