UK Prime Minister Burnham's First UN Speech: AI Needs Global Regulatory Standards

PANews reported on September 23 that the UK's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who has just taken office, held his first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, and the meeting got off to a cordial start. Trump set aside their differences on the Middle East, calling the British leader "a natural businessman."

In his speech at the UN General Assembly, Burnham proposed that amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the UK can serve both as a driving force and as a prudent counterbalance.

Burnham said world leaders must heed warnings about artificial intelligence and establish global regulatory standards, because "the fundamental decisions about this technology are too important to be left to chance."

He said AI has enormous potential, but it will also "disrupt the way we live and work and amplify all kinds of risks. We have all heard the warnings, and we must take them seriously."

Burnham said the UK will push countries to adopt rules on AI model transparency and access rights, and go further by striving to get tech companies to comply with these rules as well.

This could put him at odds with Trump. Speaking at the UN on Tuesday, Trump said the United States "completely rejects any attempt to build a globalized approach to regulating artificial intelligence."
