US Government Bitcoin Holdings Decrease to 328,372 BTC in 2026

As of early October 2026, the US government holds approximately 328,372 Bitcoin, a decrease of about 1,635 BTC from earlier this year. This decline reflects a broader trend in the government's cryptocurrency holdings, which are primarily derived from law enforcement seizures rather than purchases. The total value of these holdings is estimated to be between $26 billion and $28 billion, based on current Bitcoin prices ranging from $82,000 to $83,000 per coin.

The recent activity surrounding these holdings has been notable, particularly in the first week of October when wallets associated with the US government transferred around 17,733 BTC to Coinbase Prime, the institutional custody and trading arm of the cryptocurrency exchange. While no sales have been confirmed, this movement appears to be part of a custody consolidation strategy rather than a liquidation of assets, as mandated by Executive Order 14233, which prohibits the sale of seized cryptocurrencies.

The US government's Bitcoin assets largely stem from two significant cases: approximately 94,643 BTC from the 2016 Bitfinex hack and about 127,271 BTC from Silk Road recoveries. Despite the prohibition on sales, the decline in holdings raises questions about potential court-ordered returns to victims or changes in wallet attribution by tracking services, although no definitive explanations have been provided. The variance in reported holdings among different trackers highlights the complexities of accurately accounting for these assets.
