Global Smartphone Shipments Hit 14-Year Low Amid Storage Chip Shortage

Global smartphone shipments are projected to decline by 20% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, reaching their lowest level for this period since 2012, according to market research firm Counterpoint Research. The ongoing construction of artificial intelligence infrastructure is exacerbating the shortage of storage chips, which is driving up costs and affecting supply in the consumer electronics sector. This marks the second consecutive quarter that the smartphone market has been impacted by the storage chip crisis, leading manufacturers to increase retail prices by approximately 20% cumulatively since the beginning of 2026.

Samsung continues to lead the global smartphone market with a 23% share, despite a 3% decline in shipments compared to the previous year. Apple has seen its market share rise to 22%, marking its first time surpassing the 20% threshold in the third quarter, although its shipments also fell year-on-year. The absence of the base model iPhone 18 has contributed to a lower distribution scale for Apple in the first month of new product launches compared to the previous year's iPhone 17 series. However, the iPhone 18 Pro series has shown better performance in markets such as China and India.

Xiaomi experienced a significant decline in shipments, dropping over 30% year-on-year, which reduced its market share to 10%. Both OPPO and vivo also faced challenges, with their shipments declining by over 20% and market shares falling to 9% and 8%, respectively. Counterpoint's senior analyst Shilpi Jain noted that consumers are increasingly holding onto their existing devices longer and are considering refurbished options. The research firm indicated that a substantial recovery in global smartphone shipments is unlikely until there are improvements in the costs and supply of storage chips.
